War Monument - Manchester, VT |
From The Honor Roll Project at Nutfield Genealogy:
"The Honor Roll Project is an effort to transcribe and photograph
military honor rolls. The transcribed names make the soldiers available
for search engines, so that descendants and family members can find
them on the internet. It is a simple, but very rewarding project."
This afternoon I took a ride into town to photograph and transcribe one of the war monuments in town. Manchester was a gathering spot for soldiers during the American Revolution, especially in the days before the Battle of Bennington. The monument represents this with the figure of a Revolutionary War soldier at the top. The monument, however, is dedicated to the men of four wars.
Facing the road at the base of the monument is the dedication plaque, stating that the monument was placed in 1905. Working clockwise around the base are plaques list men who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the Civil War. I've transcribed each panel below.

I have to say my shirt button almost popped off from the proud feeling I felt reading the Smith names on the Revolutionary War side of the monument. And John Smith's wife, Mary (Molly), was just as brave dealing with the Tories when he was away with the militia. Pretty darned inspiring.
ReplyDeleteI've lived nearby my entire life but only just realized my husband's connection to the ODells (Jacob & Jeremiah). Thanks for posting this! We'll be sure and stop in to see the real thing this summer.
ReplyDeleteAccording to my family's records the Jas. Lewis on the Revolutionary War plaque is my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfather.
ReplyDeleteWhat street is this located on? I have a c1910 photograph postcard showing this monument at the end of a street with big homes with big columns.
ReplyDeleteHi David. This monument is right on Main Street, also known at Vermont Route 7A. It is definitely not the end of a street, but there are big houses with big columns on both sides of the street. The monument is in the middle of a median strip, right in front of the Equinox Inn. Does that help?
DeleteThanks, information like this is always a big help.
DeleteAaron Sexton was my ancestor, and George and Jonathan were his brothers. I do not have a lot of history on my relative so this was a pleasant surprise to discover his name in stone!
